What is Digital Storytelling?
  • A true story
  • Told with the help of computers.
  • Images – Text - Sound-effects – Music - Voice-over
  • “Invented” in Berkeley in the early 90’s
  • Writers, artists and computer people who were trying to find a way to incorporate new computer technology with storytelling.
5
How?
  • Set up the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley and the Digital Clubhouse in New York City...

  • ...where they held courses and invited people for screenings.
6
Guidelines
  • 1. Point of view. Something important the storyteller wants to tell.
  • 2. Drama. It is necessary to capture the viewer.
  • 3. Emotional content.
  • 4. Voice-over. Will make more personal and easier for the viewer to connect to the storyteller.
7
"5."
  • 5. Music - will enhance the emotional feeling.
  • 6. Economy - Keep it short and simple.
  • 7. Change pace - sustains an audience’s interest.

How I have been inspired by Digital Storytelling

  • In Learning Bridge: Swedish students communicate with American students over the internet and go on a two-week trip to USA to visit some of the students and stay in host families –> We run this project to make the students grow and change into more responsible persons.
9
"In order to emphasize personal..."
  • In order to emphasize personal growth and change we let them do a digital story about a person or an occasion that has changed them or have had a great importance for them.
10
"Sebastian:"
  • Sebastian: a story about his grandfather who had moved America in the 50’s to work in the auto-industry.
  • Did a digital story about how inspiring this is to him and that he wants to do the same thing.
  • And it also became a historic digital story about his grandfather and his family history.
11
"Joakim and Lisa:"
  • Joakim and Lisa: did a digital story about Joakim’s mother and grandfather who escaped Nazi-Germany and was rescued by the Swedish White buses.
  • It becomes a story both about his family’s history and an important historical event.
12

B. Powerpoint and Design history
  • Design history and Basic computer skills
  • Combine them into ONE course
  • Specific exercises which include both design history and a specific computer program

14
"Teaching basic computer skills can..."
  • Teaching basic computer skills can boring and abstract if you don’t fill them with relevant content.
  • I can use part of the computer skills classes for design history
  • The students has to internalise the material to make it understandable
15
Mondrian painting to De Stijl chair
  • Show a painting turn into a chair.
  • Shows the connection between Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl-movement. The idea is to show how art can inspire design.
  • The students learn how to make an animation in PP and how to add sound effects at the same time as they learn design history
16
A computer game about the Bauhaus school of design
  • Make a computer game about the Bauhaus school.
  • Must include both ideas, characters and design from the Bauhaus
  • Must be a pedagogic game
  • Must include certain technical aspects in the game
